Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful in the neighborhood. Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor? Beautiful days call for beautiful dresses.
Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful in the neighborhood. Would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor? Beautiful days call for beautiful dresses.
Yellow is always reserved for sunny, beautiful days. Today, is one of those days.
Where: Fort Greene park, East Village, Nolita House (for bluegrass and brunch) and then all over Alphabet City. Why: Because days like today make us happy to be alive.
Where: Work Why: I finally felt that feeling again— when I wear something out of my comfort zone, but still like the outfit. I’m taking a huge risk wearing shorts to work, but because the partners and merchandisers have been talking about them lately, I think its gonna be ok. I found these at Concordia Thrift in Fort Wayne as part of a “Whatver you can fit into this bag is $5 sale. So these were $0.75. Nice! Yay summer.
Where: Coney Island Beach!!!! Why: I like taking a long sleeve shirt with me to the beach. Its cotton, so its cool and lightweight and feels good blocking the sun after speading a while on the beach. Short shorts are acceptable and encouraged seaside. And I’m trying my hardest to always wear a hat and shades to protect my skin and eyes.
Where: work, Bryant Park for lunch Why: Well, I was sort of feeling sorry for myself and sick of all my clothes so I went down to my favorite little store Beacon’s Closet and saw this dress. But she needed some big time help so I cut off the sleeves (that were previously down to the elbow) and hemmed the skirt (because I’ve realized that wearing things too long ain’t doing nothing for my stems). Now I am in love with it, even tho its a tad too short for work (oops). Good for sunbathing tho. C-ya at the park.
Where: office Why: I woke up this morning and for some reason it felt like the first day of school. Maybe because I tried this outfit on last night and laid it out, or maybe because my lunch was packed and in the fridge. I love wearing new outfits for the first time— really, who doesn’t? I chopped 4 from this dress and hemmed it (properly, with a hem stitch) and I’m totally loving it.
Where: Slumber Party Extraordinaire Why: Most errand filled Saturdays are in yoga pants and a tee shirt. Today I felt like getting my day started right and dressing like I would for any work day. With my hair up high, this felt like the perfect outfit.
Where: just work Why: Last night my friends and I were talking about little girls who have pet bats and this morning it must have rubbed off on me because I’m totally playing the part of a modern Wednesday Adams (and hey! its Wednesday!). My dress yesterday was fitted so near the end of the day I was a bit uncomfortable. Today its an easy knit dress with one of my over dye project tops and flats.
Where: thrifting in Williamsburg with sister Why: Yesterday I wrote about really dressing down on weekends/non-work days. Another example today. And because everyone in Manhattan has such a problem with mom shorts, I thought I’d wear them to the place that thrives on mom shorts. Today I scored a vest (thrifted, not vintage) and some shades a la Holly Golightly. Rebecca got a purple NYU tee at Salvation Army for $1. Score.
Where: Work, drinks apres Why: Just having one of those— lets make it easy type of days. And this shirt was ironed, so I thought- why the hell not?!
Where: another crazy busy day at work Why: It was a little dark and moody this morning and that accounts for the black top. I didn’t want to wear pants and haven’t let this skirt out for a while, so there goes the bottom. The belt pulls everything together and the flats are for comfort. The scarf is another thing that I’ve been moving around all day (neck, hair, wrist).
Where: here, now (work) Why: There’s no science to this look at all. Wanted to wear black (instead of blue) jeans. Needed a belt. Wanted to be a little rock n roll. Secretary top doesn’t really scream CBGBs, so I threw on the jacket (and its a good thing, I’ve been chilly all day). And then some shades and a scarf and I’m out the door. Also left my camera on B&W by accident so no technicolor today.
Where: office Why: These transition weeks between summer and fall are a little hard for me. Luckily, this little black dress (really a last resort dress) works whenever I can’t figure anything out. Keeping it really minimal with no big jewelry and a summer scarf. Its always good to have one dress/look in the back of your closet (probably something simple) that you can throw on when you really don’t care but still want to be polished. I used to wear this dress twice a week.
Where: Checking out Brooklyn Flea, coffee shop Why: New York weather always seems to have tricks up her sleeve, especially when we get a dose of reality (it is still summer) and a 90+ degree day. Ok, maybe it wasn’t 90, but in the sun it sure felt like it. After switching my summer closet out yesterday (shoot!) I had to work with what I had left. I am keeping this skirt in the mix because its light and airy, but also works with tights and boots as a good transition piece. I always keep all of my tanks in a drawer year round as well as my non white shoes. So wet hair up and head band on. I’m staying cool today.
Where: work Why: I’m feeling so spooky lately. I’ve been reading the Twilight saga (on New Moon now) and dreaming about vampires. So the all black seems to work nicely for my mood today. Also pumped to wear my new Payless shoes!!
Where: hair cut and lunch in the LES Why: If you’ve been reading my day to day, non fashion blog, you may know that I have a huge obsession with ABC’s Pushing Daisies. The style of the entire show is so beautiful, especially the costumes of the lead female character- Chuck. She’s always wearing something that’s 50’s inspired in shades of red, pink, green, orange and yellow. So today, I took nods from her and applied them to my outfit as I ran around the lower east side of NYC. First to get a dazzling new ‘do from Joseph at Top Cuts salon (which is listed as Salon de Tops in my address book for some reason), then met up with Courtney, the co-author of my foodie blog My Daily Bread. It was the perfect outfit for the perfect day.
Where: Work Why: I hate the gloomies!! That feeling you get when you wake up, realize you definitely have a caffeine addiction (re: headache), you think you either got up too early or that its just not going to bed sunny today and… well, those are the gloomies. A general sadness fills the air too. I guess nearly all black is fitting for the day.
Where: Just work Why: I’ve been really looking foward to wearing this skirt that I picked up at Concordia Thrift in Fort Wayne, Indiana last Christmas. It was $2.50!! They have the best stuff and everything is really really cheap. Too many “thrift†stores are becoming way too expensive. If its not really highly collected vintage and advertised as a vintage store, I’m not down to pay high prices. This whole outfit was really cheap, minus the coat which is years old anyway. Another example of how you can work a current trend and still go easy on your pocketbook.
Where: To the Office Why: Last night I was flipping through the pages of the November Elle and really loved a feature film section they did, taking modern pieces with a hint of the old movies. So I started with this bright red beaded vintage cardigan. I wanted to wear tights, but all of my good colors are in the wash and instead choose jeans. MISTAKE. Although I’m comfortable, I really hate the way jeans photograph and I’ve felt very non-chic wearing them lately. I like my bright tights and short skirts much more.. I just may have to get some thick tights to layer underneath as the temperatures continue to drop. Note to self: Would be much more glam with skirt and heals. Also in love with my leopard coat, which has been hanging on my office chair for weeks that I finally brought home with me last night. So today has brought on two missions: dress more chic and get my laundry already so I can bring back the tights.
Where: Work Why: After a year I finally had this dress taken to the cleaners so it was about time I wore it again. Didn’t want to do plain black underneath so I took a risk and went for patterned tights. I know a lot of you may not think this works, but I like the dimension it adds to the outfit. I’m a fan of mixing patterns (more on that later).
Where: Lunch and coffee and traveling (first in Tampa, then flying to NYC) Why: Its always a little tough to go from sunny Florida (or Cali or where ever) back to cold New York. Today I layered this warm (yet tres chic) wrap fleece to take me from the sun to the city. Jeans and boots were the “bigger†(read: take most space) items I brought with me so I wore/am wearing them both ways on the plane. Loved the sun and sad to be leaving after such a short trip.
