"Don't be afraid to take chances. A lot of my readers email me personally expressing how scared they are to dress how they feel. I think it's important to be yourself, and at the end of the day, they are just clothes! so have fun."
Tell us a little bit about yourself, your blog and where you're from.
My name is Vanessa and I'm The Haute Pursuit! I started my blog on my birthday last year after I made a new years eve resolution to start making my dreams of working in fashion come true. What started as a little hobby has turned into a full fledged obsession! I blog about my daily outfits and everything in between including DIY's, videos, and tutorials. I'm from Vancouver Canada, so by default when I'm not blogging or pouting in front of a camera I'm hiking around our trails or climbing up a mountain with my pals.
How do you describe your personal fashion sense and how has it changed over the years? Any specific style icons?
My style has definitely changed over the years--what hasn't is my need and desire to be an individual in the way I dress. So I've gone through every phase known to man: grunge, lolita, japanese street kid, preppy, sporty etc (the list really does go on!). My personal style is still a bit of a mix bag. I think deep down I'm a minimalist (I can live in t shirts and jeans forever) but with a penchant for flamboyant, rock n rolla pieces. I have a lot of icons, too much to name, but first and foremost is Kate Moss who was one of the first models I discovered while flipping through my Mom's magazines, then Julia Roitfeld, Lou Doillon, Jane Birkin, Mick Jagger and David Bowie, Jen Brill, and much more!
If there was one place in the world you could live, where would it be?
New York City--it's just magical there
What is the one thing in your closet you could not live without?
I don't try to get attached to anything I own because I have nasty habit of losing things, but if I had to say one thing....it'd be my gold coin necklace that I wear every day.
Who are your favorite designers and places to shop?
Right now hands down, I'm completely enamored with the Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte. I've been following them for some time now, but was really blown away by their collection for F/W 10. I also really love Proenza Schouler, Preen, Christopher Kane, Alexander Wang, Jen Kao, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Ann Demuelemeester, etc. As to where I shop, I try to do most of it in second hand stores--I love searching for treasures. Then for new items my go to's include H&M, Zara, Forever21, Aritzia, www.shopbop.com, net-a-porter.com
What do you save on or splurge on?
Hmmm there is a lot of grey area here! Generally, I splurge on shoes and bags. I see those more as investment pieces, whereas most clothes are dispensable.
What advice would you give to someone else about how to find their style?
Don't be afraid to take chances. A lot of my readers email me personally expressing how scared they are to dress how they feel. I think it's important to be yourself, and at the end of the day, they are just clothes! so have fun :)
